by Sister Henrita Frost, SSND

Sister Henrita is a member of the Christine Center’s Leadership Team.

Having recognized the urgent and compelling need for compassion to permeate our Universe, if peace in the Global Community is to be possible, the Core Team of the Christine Center with the support of the Board of Directors, applied for partnership with the Charter for Compassion.

On October 24, 2014, we received the following communication: “On behalf of the Charter for Compassion International, I am pleased to welcome you to our Charter partner team. We are partners with the Religion/Spirituality/Faith Based Teams. You are invited into our partnership as we dedicate ourselves to be compassionate and become compassion for the sake of our local and Global Community and to be a compassionate Christine Center.”

In February 2008, Karen Armstrong, author of Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life received a TED Prize for her book and thus began work on the Charter for Compassion. After consulting with the general public, the Charter was crafted by leading thinkers of major religions. It was launched November 2009 with the concentration of activating the Golden Rule around the world.

The poet, Walt Whitman, once wrote, “I am larger and better than I thought. I did not think I held so much goodness.”  To paraphrase it, we could say as One, “We did not think that we held so much compassion.” In fact, scientific studies have indicated that compassion is hardwired into our DNA.

Take time to intensify your capacity for self-compassion and compassion for others with a special book:  A Year of Living with More Compassion: 52 Quotes Weekly & Compassion Practices, edited by Richard Fields, PhD. Visit the charter for compassion and our partner page:  Charter for Compassion.
